Here's what Jeff thinks the tech sector will bring us in 2021 Each year, I like to take an appearance at the big image and forecast what's simply around the corner. Long time readers of my work understand that I follow the most exciting tech patterns on the edge of mass adoption.
These patterns are experiencing exponential growth and creating incredible opportunities for financiers. I desire to make sure all our readers are prepared for what's next. And with that in mind, let me draw the picture of what I see being available in the next 12 months 1. 5G Devices Our brand-new 5G (fifth-generation) cordless networks are a subject I've been covering for years now.
Even though the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted supply chains in 2015, an outstanding 250 million 5G-enabled devices were still offered. Specifically in the second quarter, there were supply chain disturbances, manufacturing delays, and work stoppages. And all of this ultimately caused Apple postponing the release of the 5G-enabled i, Phone 12 by 2 months.
When you think about all of that, selling 250 million systems is amazing. More importantly, the hold-ups brought on by the pandemic developed a lots of bottled-up demand. And that demand is now going to be pressed into 2021. In fact, I forecast that more than 500 million 5G gadgets will be delivered in 2021.
Phase 3 of 5G When I have actually spoken about 5G in the past, I've explained its three different phases. In Phase One, the infrastructure of these brand-new networks is built out, including all the brand-new towers and fiber-optic circuitry that 5G will need. In Stage 2, 5G devices go on sale.
And in Phase 3, 5G services start to be used. That's when we begin to see applications running on 5G networks. Think of things like enormous multiplayer games over a cellphone. That's not possible with 4G. It will be with 5G. And my 2nd 5G forecast for 2021 is that we will begin Stage Three by this summer season.
However they will care if there are interesting applications that can just be accessed with a 5G phone. So more and more customers will head out to purchase a 5G phone to gain access to these applications. That leads to more 5G apps being established. In reality, 5G is going to open a suite of incredible applications: self-driving automobiles, the Internet of Things, robotic surgical treatment, and more.
The financial investment opportunities moving forward will be enormous. 3. CRISPR Genetic Editing Stepping away from 5G, the next crucial technology I visualize in 2021 is CRISPR hereditary editing. CRISPR means "clustered regularly interspaced brief palindromic repeat." It's a mouthful. But it's one of the most exciting developments in biotechnology.
